AMD’s third-quarter 2026 revenue rose 45% to $13.4 billion as data-centre sales grew 97% on the first volume shipments of its MI450-series accelerators. Guidance of about $17 billion for the fourth quarter was well above expectations, though gaming revenue fell 40% and free cash flow was thin.

The quarter ended on 26 September 2026. AMD reported GAAP operating income of $2.83 billion, more than double a year earlier, and GAAP diluted earnings of $1.46 per share. Shares rose about 8% in extended trading, according to CNBC. The results confirm that AMD’s growth now depends almost entirely on AI data-centre spending, while its consumer businesses are mixed.

1. MI450 shipments drive the data-centre jump
Data Center revenue rose 97% to $8.55 billion and segment operating income reached $2.88 billion, a margin of about 34%. AMD attributed the growth to the launch of its MI450-series accelerators, with volume shipments of the MI455X beginning during the quarter. The company said Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle are running workloads on its first Helios rack-scale systems, and management expects Helios deployments to increase substantially in the fourth quarter.
2. Consumer businesses diverge
The combined Client and Gaming segment fell 8% to $3.72 billion and its operating income dropped to $573 million from $867 million. Client processor revenue still grew 7% to $2.95 billion, but Gaming revenue fell 40% to $773 million. Embedded revenue rose 29% to $1.11 billion, extending its recovery. Outside the data centre, AMD’s growth is therefore modest, and its consumer exposure is shrinking as a share of the business.

3. Guidance implies a steep fourth-quarter ramp
AMD guided fourth-quarter revenue of about $17.0 billion, plus or minus $510 million, which the company says would be growth of about 66% on a year earlier and 27% on the third quarter. Consensus was about $16.2 billion. The non-GAAP gross margin guide of about 55% was slightly below the 55.3% expected, because management said data-centre AI products carry below-average margins. It also said the fourth quarter should be the first in which data-centre AI revenue exceeds server CPU revenue.
4. Cash flow lags the profit growth
Operating cash flow from continuing operations was $1.20 billion and capital expenditure $648 million, leaving free cash flow of $554 million, or about 4% of revenue. Inventory rose by about $3 billion during the quarter to roughly $11.5 billion, consistent with building stock ahead of the fourth-quarter ramp. Free cash flow for the first nine months of 2026 was $4.68 billion. Chief executive Lisa Su told CNBC that the company has secured wafers, packaging and memory to support much higher growth next year.

Scenarios to watch
If Helios deployments ramp as guided, the inventory build should convert into revenue and cash in the fourth quarter. Delays in rack-scale deployments, tighter supply of memory or packaging, or slower customer capital spending would leave AMD holding more stock. Gross margin trends will show how far the shift towards AI accelerators dilutes profitability. These are scenarios for monitoring, not forecasts.
