Gold price chart (USD per troy ounce)
How the gold value calculation works
Gold is quoted worldwide as US dollars per troy ounce of pure gold. A troy ounce weighs 31.1035 grams, about 10% more than the everyday 28.35-gram ounce used for food. The calculator does four steps:
- Converts your weight to grams.
- Multiplies by the purity to get the weight of pure gold. 18K gold is 75% gold, so 10 g of 18K contains 7.5 g of pure gold.
- Multiplies by the spot price per gram, which is the spot price divided by 31.1035.
- Converts dollars into your currency at the latest exchange rate, then applies any dealer premium or discount you entered.
Worked example: 10 grams of 18K gold with spot at $3,900 per ounce is 10 × 0.75 × (3,900 ÷ 31.1035) ≈ $940 of gold content.
Gold karat and purity chart
| Karat | Gold content | Hallmark | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 99.9% | 999 / 9999 | Bullion bars and coins, Korean 순금 (pure gold) gifts |
| 22K | 91.67% | 916 | Indian and Gulf jewellery, Gold Eagle, Krugerrand, Sovereign |
| 21K | 87.5% | 875 | Middle East jewellery |
| 18K | 75% | 750 | Fine jewellery and watches |
| 14K | 58.5% | 585 | US and Korean jewellery |
| 10K | 41.7% | 417 | Lowest karat sold as gold in the US |
| 9K | 37.5% | 375 | UK and Australian jewellery |
Karat measures purity in 24ths. 14/24 is 58.33%, but the hallmark standard for 14K is 585 parts per thousand, so the calculator uses 58.5%. If your item is stamped with a number such as 750 or 916, choose Custom fineness and type that number.

Why a buyer won’t pay the full melt value
The calculator shows the value of the gold content at the international spot price. That is a reference point, not a guaranteed offer. Bullion is sold above spot, because the premium pays for minting and the dealer’s margin. Buyback offers usually come in below spot. Jewellery buyers also deduct refining costs, and the price you pay includes local taxes such as VAT or GST.
Use the dealer premium / discount box to test a quote. If a buyer offers 92% of melt value, enter −8 and compare the result with what you were offered. Getting quotes from more than one buyer is the easiest way to spot a lowball offer.
Gold price in Korea per don (금 한 돈 시세)
In Korea gold is priced per don (돈), a traditional unit of 3.75 grams. With the currency set to KRW and the unit set to don, the calculator shows the international price of one don in won. Domestic prices, including the KRX gold market and jewellers’ buy and sell quotes, can sit above or below that figure. Buying physical gold adds 10% VAT, and local supply and demand can push domestic prices to a premium over the international price, as happened sharply in early 2025.
Gold price in India per 10 grams and per tola
Indian gold prices are quoted per 10 grams or per tola (11.66 g), usually for 24K and 22K. Indian retail prices include import duty and 3% GST, and jewellery adds making charges, so they run above the international price shown here. Set the currency to INR to compare.
Frequently asked questions
Is 24K gold 100% pure?
In practice 24K means 99.9% (999) or 99.99% (9999) pure. The calculator uses 99.9% for 24K, and a few presets such as the Maple Leaf use 99.99%.
How often does the price update?
The spot price refreshes about every two minutes while the page is open, and exchange rates update hourly. You can type your own spot price at any time, for example the price your dealer is quoting.
Should I include stones and clasps?
No. Weigh only the gold. Gemstones, steel springs and enamel add weight but no gold value, so subtract them or ask the buyer to weigh the gold separately.
Why is gold priced in troy ounces?
The troy system has been used for precious metals for centuries, and the London and New York markets settle in troy ounces. That is why the global spot price is always per troy ounce, whatever unit you buy in locally.
For information only, not investment advice. Spot prices are indicative international prices and can differ from the price a bank, dealer or jeweller quotes you.
