What moves the gold price
1. The US dollar
Gold is priced in dollars, so a weaker dollar makes it cheaper for buyers in other currencies and tends to lift the dollar price. A strong dollar works the other way. For buyers in Korea or India, the local price also moves with USD/KRW or USD/INR, which is why the won price of gold can rise even on a day when the dollar price is flat.
2. Real interest rates
Gold pays no interest. When inflation-adjusted bond yields rise, holding gold costs more in lost income, and gold has traditionally struggled. Since 2022 that link has weakened, because heavy central bank buying has kept gold rising even with high real yields.
3. Central bank buying
Central banks bought more than 1,000 tonnes of gold a year in 2022, 2023 and 2024, according to the World Gold Council. That was roughly double the pace of the previous decade. Much of the buying comes from emerging markets diversifying away from dollar reserves, and it has become one of the biggest supports under the price.
4. Investor flows and ETFs
Exchange-traded funds that hold physical gold let investors move in and out quickly. Large inflows and outflows from ETFs, along with futures positioning, often explain short-term swings.
5. Risk and geopolitics
Gold is a traditional safe haven. War, financial stress and political shocks tend to bring in buyers, although the effect often fades once the immediate scare passes.
6. Jewellery demand
India and China are the biggest jewellery markets. That demand is price-sensitive: it usually falls when prices spike and recovers on dips, which can help steady the market.
What moves the silver price
- Gold’s direction. Silver usually follows gold, with bigger moves both ways.
- Industrial demand. Electronics, solar panels and vehicles take roughly half or more of silver supply, so silver is more exposed to the economic cycle than gold.
- Supply. Most silver is a by-product of base-metal mines, and the Silver Institute has reported a market deficit every year since 2021.
- A small market. Silver is much smaller than gold, so investor flows can move it sharply.
The gold-silver ratio tracks how the two metals perform against each other.
Gold prices in Korea and India
In Korea, gold is priced per don (3.75 g), and domestic prices can trade at a premium or discount to the international price. In India, prices are quoted per 10 grams or per tola and include import duty and GST. Our gold calculator converts the international price into either unit.
